“For the better portion of my life I have struggled with body dysmorphia. I grew up surrounded by every reason to reject my body & I did from a very young age, watching my mother fad diet, surrounded by toxic media encouraging eating disorders, having adults tell me I would have to choose between food or love. It feels easier most of the time to just keep my struggles to myself because it leaves less room for people to involve more negative opinions that twist my perspective. But then I think about the younger girls, ones like my daughter who will have negative opinions infused into their lives by social media & ever-growing AI. You can’t hide them from it forever no matter how hard you try. That soon it will be so much harder for them to distinguish what is real from what is not.
When I got these pictures back my first thought wasn’t a sense of appreciation or accomplishment (Even though these photos made me feel so sexy), I became completely entranced with how I would hide anything that made me look remotely human. Something I was so excited for completely wiped by visions of something I shouldn’t even be ashamed of. The internet is exhausting. I don't want to be ashamed anymore, I don’t want to sideline my hard work with intrusive thoughts anymore. I don’t want to be a part of the campaign of unrealistic standards against females. I want to love myself. H. Myles decided not to photoshop anything. I want to love these stretch marks for they are a mark of the two extremely beautiful and intelligent children my body carried, this body that I have always been so harsh on, has given me the ability to walk, run, jump, play, laugh, cry, go after my dreams, dance, hold my loved ones, & so much more. I hope that through this journey of finding self-acceptance that even if I just help one other woman or girl to find acceptance in themselves & break this cycle of self-rejection we could create a new domino effect, one that empowers us instead of diminishing and destroying.
